We have all heard the saying “there is never enough time” or “there is only 24 hours in a day”, well how would you like to learn how to Get More Done in Less Time.
If you are running a business, climbing the corporate ladder or in charge of a family then you have a million and one things to do but the day is just not long enough. So what do you do, how can you increase your productivity without working even longer hours.
One suggestion I once heard, this was actually a suggestion for living longer but its relevant for this topic, was to simply get up earlier. I suppose its true, if you get up earlier you will have more time to do what you need to do, quite how you live longer I am not sure, rather you have more awake time I assume.
Anyway getting up earlier is an option but does not really help you get more done in less time and what if this is something you are already doing, rising even earlier is starting to sound like no fun at all. No forget that, unless you are someone who is sleeping in late.
What I suggest is something called “Parkinson’s Law”. Basically its a law of vacuum (no not the cleaning type). The law relates to the fact that if there is a space then something will fill it.
Now what has this got to do with you being more productive. Here’s the deal. When you are putting together a list of jobs that you want to complete for the day then give each task a time limit.
Don’t just write a list of tasks that are all open ended but give each one a time frame.
Perhaps you are planning on improving your business website, well put down 2hrs to complete this ( this is just an example). Perhaps you are writing out job applications, again put a time frame to it, 2hrs 15, do this for all your tasks that day.
Now what you do next is look at your list again (in time you will do this immediately) and shave some time off your allotted task schedule
EG; website improvements down to 1hr 30, job applications down to 1hr 45. We always give ourselves way too much time to complete anything.
What will happen now is when you are actually doing these tasks you will be more focused on completing them in the allotted time rather than going along with no real end in sight.
Its amazing how many of your tasks now get done almost to the minute that you set.
You see it’s important to put a time frame to them and then shave some time off because, this is where the Parkinson’s law bit comes in, if you don’t have an expected time of completion then the law states that something (usually more work) will come in to fill the vacuum.
More work expands to fill the space, ie your time.
Even if your a bit skeptical about this Parkinson’s Law theory I am sure you will agree that by just putting a time frame around your tasks you will not only Get More Done in Less Time but be more focused on the job at hand. And a nice by product of being focused is your quality of work levels go up.
One more thing before we go. Do your lists the night before rather than on the day.
Quite simply you will have given your mind or rather your subconscious mind (the one that never sleeps) time to go over the next days tasks. Allowing you to wake and receive some new ideas on how to go about your tasks, believe me this really works.
Your subconscious mind is truly your best friend.
OK guys my allotted time for finishing this article has arrived and my next task awaits. I hope you enjoyed this article and it helps you Get More Done in Less Time.
